Incoming psychology prospects in Massachusetts may be required to complete a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Psychology as the first step in their path to practice. The American Psychological Association (APA) does not currently accredit this level of degree, opening up multiple options for you to choose from at this level. Once you have completed both programs, you can begin searching for a doctoral program that suits your future plans for practice in the field.

Steps to Become a Psychologist in Massachusetts

  1. During your second step towards becoming a psychologist, you should identify an APA-accredited Ph.D or Psy.D program for enrollment. Each program provides a different focus for incoming psychologist prospects, so you should choose a program that is closely related to the type of work you would like to pursue in the field. During each program, you can expect to participate in multiple internship opportunities to help increase your skills in the field.
  2. The experience you gain during your educational program is only half of what is required to become a psychologist in this state. The total amount of supervised experience needed to become a psychologist is 3,200, half of which must be complete after your doctoral program. Your state requires that you obtain a temporary license prior to gaining postdoctoral experience.
  3. The path to becoming a psychologist in Massachusetts may also require you to engage in testing at the state and national level. Massachusetts requires that you participate in Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) and their own state examination that covers laws and ethical practice requirements relevant to psychologists. Passing these examinations can put you one step closer to becoming a fully licensed psychologist in this state.
  4. Once you have completed all of the components listed above, you can apply for full licensing as a psychologist in your state. This process includes the submission of educational, experience, and testing documentation, background checks, and even submission of professional references. In the next sections, the licensure process is detailed to provide you with more specific information about what is required by your state.
