Steps to Become a Psychologist in Alaska

  1. If you are one of the many skilled learners in Alaska that are seeking a future career as a psychologist, you should begin your engagement at the undergraduate level. In order to be considered for licensing as a psychologist, you will need to achieve a doctoral-level degree and training. Beginning with a Bachelor's in Psychology and then a Master's in Psychology can be an excellent way to begin gaining skills relevant to the type of work you can do in the future. Some learners also complete bachelor's programs in fields such as Counseling and Social Work as foundations for later learning.
  2. Once you have completed the previous degree requirements, you will need to find a Doctoral program in Psychology that qualifies you for later licensing in your state. Most psychologists currently hold a Ph.D. in Psychology or a Psy.D. in Psychology - which are 2 degree programs that could be eligible for APA-accreditation. The American Psychological Association only accredits doctoral degrees in this field, so it can be a great guide for you as you seek out programs that can help you meet your goals. The APA website currently provides a list of accredited programs for you to browse.
  3. Your doctoral program may be thoroughly reviewed during the application process for psychologist certification. A major part of your degree program that will also be reviewed is the clinical experience component. If your program currently holds accreditation with the APA, it likely has an internship component that totals 1 year. This may be broken down into different stages or take place at various times throughout your program. Documentation of this experience may be required when applying for licensure.
  4. Post-doctoral experience takes place after you complete your degree program. At this point along your path, you can choose to exercise your skills in a specialized area of practice, which may allow you to be licensed within that specialty after completion. Your state requires that 1-year experience requirement be closely supervised by a psychologist that currently holds licensing in that practice area.
  5. As part of the final steps towards becoming a psychologist in Alaska, you may submit your application along with all required fees and be authorized for testing. All psychologist prospects may be required to pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) as well as a state examination regarding rules and laws in your particular state. Once these steps have been completed your state board may approve you for licensing as a psychologist.
