Steps to Become a Psychologist in Florida
- If you live in Florida and are considering a future career as a psychologist, you should first enroll in and complete a Bachelor's and Master's in Psychology. At the master's level you can choose a specialization such as Counseling Psychology or Clinical Psychology - depending on the type of service you would like to provide in the field after licensing. All states require that you hold a license to be considered a psychologist, so the stages of preparation for this career may be aligned specifically with what your state requires for licensing.
- Enrollment in a doctoral program in psychology should be your next step towards a career in this field. Learners can choose from either a Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Psychology to pursue, with each having slightly different focuses for students enrolled. In order to be approved for licensing in the future, your degree program must hold current accreditation from the American Psychological Association (APA). Accreditation means that your program provides all of the necessary components required for future licensing through your state's licensing board.
- The experience that you receive during your doctoral program can be very important to your professional development and vital to meeting your state's specific requirements for licensing. All-in-all, your state requires that you receive around 2 years of supervised experience with a contracted supervisor, 1 of which must be completed postdoctoral. At this point on your journey, your supervision placement should be in a practice area that aligns with the field you plan to work in after licensing.
- All incoming psychologists in Florida must all submit to testing prior to being accepted as psychologists. The Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) and the Florida Laws and Rules examination are the 2 required examinations for individuals at this level and must be successfully passed before moving forward in the licensing process. Each test consists of different components that can help you to become a better clinician in the field once complete.
- The path to becoming a psychologist in your state requires great attention and dedication for those pursuing it. You are required to submit an application to your state along with documentation that you have completed each required step along the way. Each stage of the licensing requirements has specific steps that must be completed prior to moving to the next stage. Once you are approved and licensed in your state, you should receive licensure documentation that allows you to work as a psychologist in Florida.
