If you are intrigued by the field of psychology and are interested in becoming a licensed psychologist, you should first identify an undergraduate program focusing on psychology or mental health. This introductory degree program can provide you with the foundation knowledge you need to move into higher level degree programs along your path. Many doctoral programs may require that you hold a Master's in Psychology prior to acceptance, making this another vital step to consider along your path.
Steps to Become a Psychologist in New York
- Since the minimum degree requirement for licensing in New York is at the doctoral level, you will next need to find and enroll in a licensure-qualifying doctoral degree program with a focus in Psychology. All across the country, applicants look to the American Psychological Association (APA) for a list of accredited Ph.D or Psy.D programs to consider in the field of psychology. There are multiple focuses and specializations you can pursue while still choosing accredited programs.
- Prior to becoming a psychologist in New York, the Board requires that you participate in all doctoral experience components and post-doctoral clinical experience opportunities. Most APA accredited doctoral programs consist of around 1 year of supervised clinical experience components, which can help you obtain 50% of your required hours for certification. The remaining year (1,750 hours) are required post-doctoral. This part of your experience should take place in a psychological setting under the supervision of licensed psychologists.
- Once you first submit you application along with proof of degree and experience, you may then be authorized to register for testing. Applicants for testing may be required to pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) developed by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB) with a score of at least 75. This examination can test your knowledge in professional practice of psychology in the field as well as your understanding of clinical concepts utilized in the treatment field.
- Applying for licensing through the New York State Education Department: Office of the Professions includes many different components that seek to verify the steps listed above. Once you have provided all required documentation and verification to the state, you will be notified of your approval as a licensed psychologist in New York.
