With over 100 different schools in Texas offering psychology degrees, there are multiple options. However to practice psychology in Texas, you should consider what it takes to become a psychologist - there are a number of requirements and you want to make sure any program you are considering (at any degree level) will put you on the path for success.

Steps to Become a Psychologist in Texas

The initial educational requirements for becoming a psychologist in Texas includes involvement in Bachelor's and Master's programs in Psychology. Many learners may choose to pursue specializations at the master's level that coincide with doctoral practice, such as Clinical or Diagnostic Psychology. This part of the process can take anywhere from 5-6 years depending on whether you enroll in degree programs at a full-time rate.

  1. The minimum degree requirement for psychologists in Texas is a Ph.D or Psy.D in Psychology. Accreditation required for this program is provided by the American Psychological Association (APA) - which only currently accredits doctoral level degree programs. Many APA-accredited programs at this level consists of around 1 year of clinical components to help you meet the licensing requirements of the state in which it is provided.
  2. The next step along your path is to complete all supervised experience hours required by the state of Texas. The first half of your experience takes place during your doctoral degree program. This could include internships, practica, or even residencies within psychological practice organizations. The supervised hours that you collect during your program will need to be documented and sent into your state licensing board upon completion. Texas requires that you obtain a provisional license prior to engaging in postdoctoral experience, with steps to this process outlined in the licensing process found in the sections below. Once you are provisionally licensed, you can move forward into gaining the required experience hours remaining for licensing.
  3. Once your state receives verification of your degree experience and postdoctoral experience, you may then be set up for licensure testing as a final step towards licensing. There are currently multiple phases of testing including the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP), Jurisprudence Examination, and Oral Examination. Each exam tests different types of knowledge and skills relevant to professional practice as a psychologist.
  4. The final step towards becoming a psychologist in the state of Texas is transitioning from provisionally licensed to fully licensed. Your state requires that you submit all required documentation, complete all experience, and pass all examinations prior to being promoted to this licensing level. Once you hold a license to practice in this state you are free to work under the title of psychologist.
