Steps to Become a Psychologist in Arizona

  1. Once you have identified the field of Psychology as your licensing goal, you should begin your journey at the bachelor's level. Many future psychologists in the field choose a Bachelor's in Psychology or Counseling to begin their learning experience. While some doctoral programs accept graduates at the bachelor's level, some may require that you complete a Master's in Psychology prior to applying. The total time required to complete both degrees at a full-time enrollment rate is about 6 years. Your undergraduate program may include generalized topics and historical development of the field while your master's programs may provide you with a direct focus on psychological services in the field.
  2. Completion of your bachelor's and master's degree program should be followed by enrollment in Psy.D. or Ph.D. programs in Psychology. There are numerous specialization options currently available for future psychologists, with one of the most popular being Clinical Psychology. In order to become licensed in the future, your doctoral program should be APA-accredited and include around 1-year of internships within the total program. Completion of this step can take anywhere from 3-5 years depending on your school.
  3. There are amply supervision and experience requirements present for incoming psychologists in the state of Arizona. The first portion of your experience requirements take place during your doctoral degree program, while the second half takes place after your graduation. The total number of hours required for licensure in Arizona is 3,000 hours and can include a combination of different post-doctoral experience options. Your state also requires that you keep documents pertaining to your supervision to provide during the final licensing process.
  4. Your application for licensing is the next major step towards receiving approval as a psychologist. At this point in the process, you can submit all documentation to your state pertaining to your undergraduate and graduate education, supervision, and experience. Once your state has received your information they can approve you for testing as a final step for licensing. In addition to this next step, you may also be required to submit for background testing as a standard requirement for all practitioners in the state.
  5. As a psychologist applicant, you may be required to sit for the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) and the state's ethics examination as a requirement for licensing. The EPPP is a multiple-choice test that includes concepts learned during your doctoral degree program as well as your supervision experience. The goal of the examination is to test your abilities to accurately assess and provide services to individuals in the field. The state-specific ethics examination is a shorter test that provides you with the opportunity to test your knowledge of ethics expectations for practitioners in your state.
