Steps to Become a Psychologist in New Jersey

  1. The Bachelor's in Psychology program can last anywhere from 3-4 years depending on the program you choose.
  2. When you are prepared to begin applying to doctoral programs in your field, you should be aware of the accreditation requirements associated with licensing as a psychologist in your state. New Jersey required that you complete a doctoral program that holds current accreditation with the American Psychological Association (APA), so that you receive the necessary education and experience needed for practitioners in this field. The doctoral program should take around 4 years to complete and should include multiple in-person requirements as required by their accrediting agency.
  3. After considering all educational components associated with the licensing process, you should also spend some time completing the supervision elements needed for the application process. Your APA-accredited degree program should allow you to participate in multiple field experiences under direct supervision, which may be in the form of clinicals or internships during the later years of your program. This introductory experience can prepare you for the post-doctoral experience that you are required to complete after graduation from your program. All experience gained during and after your doctoral program can count towards the total requirement outlined by your state.
  4. New Jersey provides you with a specific outline of expectations to complete during the application process. You should first fill out the initial application packet received by your state, then request all official transcripts, and also submit all documentation forms outlining your supervision experience. The state of New Jersey may also ask that you submit to background testing as part of the application process. Once the state has reviewed your documents they may allow you to move forward with board testing prior to issuing our license as a psychologist.
  5. One of the major steps associated with becoming a psychologist in any state is completion of the national board examination for psychologists. The Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology is a major requirement during your licensing process and should include thorough preparation and studying prior to completing. This test may require that you recall knowledge from each level of your degree program and clinical experiences and may also include concepts related to ethical practice and clinical treatment. Your scores should be sent directly to the board prior to being approved for licensing as a psychologist in your state.
