Students will find that the classes in these programs are typical of psychology programs around the United States. Growth and Development, Child Psychology, and Abnormal Psychology are a few examples of classes at this university.

Steps to Become a Psychologist in Michigan

  1. Michigan residents pursuing the field of psychology for their career should begin with investment into undergraduate degree programs focused on psychology. This experience should then be followed by engagement in Master's in Psychology degree programs to best prepare learners for the in-depth doctoral programs ahead. Most doctoral programs require that learners hold at least a master's prior to being accepted, making it an important step in your journey towards becoming a professional psychologist.
  2. The state of Michigan requires licensure for psychologists - making the doctoral program you choose an extremely important step for your future. Your state requires that you participate in an APA-accredited doctoral program since they consist of all of the educational and experience requirements outlined by the state. The Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Psychology can provide you with an intensive learning experience that includes around 1 year of supervised clinical experience.
  3. After you have completed your degree program, your state licensing board requires that you apply for temporary licensure prior to completing the remaining supervision component for licensure. This type of licensure provides you with limited ability to practice while under the direct supervision of a licensed psychologist. During this stage of the process you can gain valuable knowledge associated with the intake, assessment, and treatment of clients within your specified practice field.
  4. Upon the completion of your supervision component, you can notify your licensing board and then sit for the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP). This test is required for all licensing prospects across the U.S. and must be passed before moving forward into a state law examination. The state requires that you have your scores sent directly to them for consideration and next step planning.
  5. The last step on your path to becoming a psychologist is submitting your final application to transition from a temporary to a fully licensed psychologist. This may require the submission of more documentation and background checks. If you have met all of the requirements of your state, you may be notified by mail once a decision is made. Receipt of your license allows you to begin practice as a psychologist in Michigan.

Psychology Scholarships in Michigan

If you are prepared and ready to begin your educational program in Psychology, you might be on the search for financial support to help pay for your educational program. Our team always recommends filling out your annual FAFSA in order to determine if you are eligible for federal grants and loans to fund your program.

In addition to what is provided through the FAFSA, you should also seek out scholarship opportunities for individuals within your field. There are many different opportunities in the U.S. based on your skills, hobbies, and even your school performance for you to consider prior to starting your program.

The Michigan Tuition Grant is an award available to Michigan residents that are pursuing a degree through degree-granting institutions. This award can provide you with $1,830 towards the cost of your program, books, or even housing fees associated with your enrollment.

This award is granted to students that can demonstrate a financial need for assistance and has an application due date of March 1st each year. If you meet the criteria for acceptance of this scholarship, you may be able to obtain funding for up to 4 years of your undergraduate program.

Students that have skills in writing may submit their application along with an essay to the Jerry Greenspan Student Voice of Mental Health Award scholarship team. This award is aimed towards funding educational programs for learners that are raising awareness about mental health issues in the U.S.

This scholarship opportunity can award a scholarship of up to $3,000 to students that are chosen through the essay process. Many scholarships offered in your state may also be found at the community or state level, so you are encouraged to research more opportunities prior to enrolling in your program.

Trends & Outlook for Psychology Careers

The state of Michigan requires that practicing psychologists be licensed accordingly before becoming employed throughout the state. Those holding a master’s degree may apply for a limited license through the state department and pass an examination before becoming officially licensed.

The same applies for doctoral level graduates, with the final license not holding any restrictions. Michigan does not require bachelor’s level graduates to be licensed before finding a career. Whether a learner decides to take the bachelor’s path or higher, there are a lot of different fields that are available for psychology professionals to work in.

Heath care, human services, and customer service are just a few of the many possibilities for employment for those with a psychology degree. Master’s and doctoral degree holders will typically choose a particular path such as neuroscience or counseling before completing their degree program.
