Steps to Become a Psychologist in Colorado
- The very first step you should take on the way to psychology licensing in the state of Colorado is to enroll in and complete both a Bachelor's and Master's in Psychology. Many learners utilize alternative degree programs in Counseling or Mental Health at the undergraduate level in order to gain the skills needed for their future career path. At the master's level, students may be permitted to choose specializations that can help them learn more about psychological practice within their chosen career area. This stage of the process can take anywhere from 5-6 years to complete.
- Once you have graduated from your master's degree program, you should search for a doctoral program in the field of Psychology that holds current accreditation with the American Psychological Association (APA). The APA provides a list of currently accredited programs on its website for you to browse. During your graduate degree program, you may be permitted to exercise your skills through in-depth research projects and internships in the field. The later part of your doctoral program may include multiple field opportunities under the direct supervision of licensed psychologists.
- The next step in this process is focused on gaining the necessary supervised experience for future licensing. The state of Colorado requires that you finish around 1 year of supervised internship experience during your doctoral degree program. The second half of your supervised experience should take place after graduation under the close supervision of a licensing psychologist. You should maintain current documentation of your supervision to submit to the Board when complete.
- After your supervision component has been completed, you can then begin your application process within your state. There are multiple items needed to complete your application, including original transcripts from all universities, professional references, and a complete application packet from your state department. Your state may also require that you submit to background testing prior to being authorized for national testing.
- The last step in your journey to becoming a psychologist in Colorado is completing 2 rounds of testing organized by your state. The first exam is the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP), a national examination for future providers of psychological services. All prospects in the field of psychology may be required to successfully pass this test prior to being accepted for licensing throughout the U.S. Colorado also requires that applicants for licensing complete their state licensing examination that focuses on their specific regulations for providers as a final element for licensure.
