Steps to Become a Psychologist in Idaho
- Completing a Bachelor's and Master's program in Psychology is your first major step towards becoming a psychologist in Idaho. This state requires a minimum of a doctorate degree to be considered for licensing, so participation in these 2 degree options is needed prior to engaging in that step. The bachelor's program can take around 4 years for most students to complete and can be found on-campus or online. The master's program typically takes around 2 years and is also offered in the online environment. The APA does not currently accredit bachelor's and master's programs since licensing is only possible at the doctoral level.
- Completion of the Bachelor's and Master's in Psychology should then lead you into doctoral level programs in your field. If you are interested in becoming a certified and licensed psychologist, you will need to be accepted into a Ph.D. or Psy.D. program that is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). This organization provides a list of accredited programs on its website for easy browsing. Enrolling into a doctoral program can lead learners down a path filled with ample research and study opportunities, as well as 1 year of supervised clinical experience to count towards their later licensure requirements. Most doctoral programs take around 4 years to complete.
- The experience gathered during your doctoral program is around half of what may be required for you to obtain licensing in your state. Once you have graduated from your program, you can then begin gaining your required post-doctoral experience under the watchful eye of a licensed psychologist in your specialty area. During this step of the process, you can observe as psychological services are provided and later provide you own services under the direction of your supervisor. The total amount of experience required in this stage is around 1 year.
- After completing the second stage of your supervised experience component, you can move forward to the application process for licensing within your state. This part of your journey should include gathering all documents pertaining to your education and experience, as well as submitting to any required testing or background checks required through your state department. You may also be required to pay application and licensing fees at different parts of the process. Once your application has been accepted, the state will contact you to move forward with the last stage of the process.
- The last step on your path to becoming a psychologist in Idaho consists of participating in national testing in the field of Psychology. The Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) includes topics related to the research and study that you participated in during your degree program and the practical knowledge that you may have gained during each of your supervision components. This test may also include concepts related to ethical practice that can test your abilities to recognize problematic situations as they arise in the field. Successful passing of this test can lead you to licensing as a psychologist in Idaho.

All APA-accredited degree programs also consist of supervised internships or residencies that can count towards the total number of hours you need for licensing in your state. Documentation of all experience components should be kept in order to send to your state licensing department at the time of application.
- After graduation from your doctoral program, you will need to apply for a temporary permit as a Psychologist in Training prior to completing the remaining half of your supervised clinical experience. During this stage of the licensing process, you need to submit your application to the Idaho Board of Psychologist Examiners along with a $175 fee. The supervisor that you choose for the second half of your experience should currently be providing services within the same treatment field that you plan to work in after licensed. Your supervisor will be required to maintain detailed records of your supervision experience for later submission to the Board of Psychologist Examiners.

All psychologist prospects in the U.S. must sit for a board examination, the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) prior to receiving their full license as a psychologist. This test is multiple choice and tests your abilities within clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of common mental health issues. Passing this exam can lead you to submit your final full application for licensing in Idaho. Completion of the application and submission of a $150 fee to the state is required at this state, along with ensuring that test scores, official transcripts, and professional recommendation letters are on file for consideration. Once all items have been received and reviewed within your state, you will be notified by mail of your current licensed status.
