Steps to Become a Psychologist in Nevada

  1. After obtaining your undergraduate and Master's degree in Psychology, you should research accredited doctoral programs listed on the American Psychological Association (APA) website. The programs holding current accreditation can lead to licensing within your state and contain all course and practice elements needed to become approved as a psychologist. Once enrolled in a program, you can participate in in-depth learning in your field and complete up to one-half of the internship and practical requirements needed for licensing in the future. Most doctoral programs take anywhere from 3-4 years to complete depending on your enrollment status.
  2. The third step on your path to becoming a psychologist is finishing all supervision elements listed by your state for licensing. You should have completed the first half of your supervision hours through your doctoral program if choosing an APA-accredited program. The second portion of your experience should happen after graduation from your program and within a specialized area that you plan to practice once licensed. You should work with your supervisor to ensure all forms and documentation related to your supervision is completed and sent to the board once complete.
  3. Step 4 along your path includes the successful completion of all testing requirements for psychologists in your state. The most prominent and well-known examination for incoming psychologists is currently the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP). Regardless of which state you are in, you may be required to sit for this test prior to moving forward in the licensing process. This exam may require intensive preparations and studying prior to your test date.
  4. The last step in pursuing a career as a psychologist is completing all application and documentation for full licensing within your state. You should find an outline of all required elements of this process through your state's licensing division, which should include an application packet and all fee schedules. You can gain more insight into the in-depth licensing process in the section below.
